Who doesn’t love some gummy bears? I’ll admit that as a child I went through quite a few Haribo bags myself 😛 That’s before I became aware of all the junk in typical gummy bears 🙁
Unfortunately when bought from the store, these tasty treats usually contain things like gelatin, artificial flavors, high-fructose corn syrups, and lots of added refined sugars. I decided to try putting an actual healthy twist on this childhood favorite. Mine are completely plant-based, packed with super fruits and naturally sweet.
Due to the difference in ingredients these vegan gummy bears will be much softer than the traditional ones. Keep that in mind! Their texture is similar to Jell-O rather than being very chewy. Regardless they will make for a healthy, tasty treat for you and your family. A ll you need is 3-4 ingredients each and a cute gummy bear mold.
How to make vegan gummy bears
- as mentioned above you will need a gummy bear mold. They are super cheap on Amazon. The one I used, linked above, comes with two sets.
- to make these gummies completely plant-based you will have to use agar powder instead of gelatin. Agar powder is a mix of carbohydrates obtained from a specific kind of seaweed, called Red Sea algae. It has no sugar, carbs, fat or calories and no specific taste. Perfect for treats like this. I used it in other recipes such as Vegan Raspberry Mousse Tart and Vegan Valentine Gummies
- As far as flavors go, you can get creative. I used acai juice, apple cider (My favorite!), and grapefruit/blood orange juice, but I can imagine other fruits such as kiwi, blueberry, pineapple, etc would make for delicious gummies as well. Whatever your heart desires 🙂

Vegan Gummy Bears

Ingredients
Acai
- 1 cup acai juice (sub with pomegranate or grape juice)
- 1 1/2 tsp agar powder
- optional: 2-3 tbsp light agave syrup (sub maple syrup or honey)
Apple Cider
- 1 cup apple juice
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tsp agar powder
- optional: 2-3 tbsp light agave syrup (sub maple syrup or honey)
Grapefruit Blood Orange
- 1/2 cup grapefruit juice
- 1/2 cup blood orange juice
- optional: 2-3 tbsp light agave syrup (sub maple syrup or honey(
- 1 1/2 tsp agar powder
Instructions
- For each flavor: In a small saucepan heat juice and agave syrup over low-medium heat. Add cinnamon for the apple cider flavor.
- Add in agar powder and simmer over low-medium for about 5 minutes while whisking continuously. Set aside and let cool down for about 5 minutes.
- With the dropper pour liquid into your gummy bear molds. Place in refrigerator for about 10 minutes until gummies have fully set.
- Transfer gummy bears into an airtight jar/container and store in the refrigerator.
- Repeat for other flavors.
